چکیده

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Linear Accelerator was used to produce a pulsed neutron beam that was incident on a U scattering sample 30 m from the source. Eight liquid scintillator (EJ-301) proton recoil fast neutron detectors located at several angles surrounding the sample were positioned at a distance 0.5 m. Neutrons resulting from elastic scattering, inelastic scattering, and fission reactions were recorded as a function of time-of-flight. Pulse shape analysis including a new gamma misclassification correction was used to reduce erroneous counts from gamma events produced from fission and inelastic scattering reactions. The experimental data were simulated using an improved model of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute neutron scattering system that included individual detector efficiencies and neutron flux shape. The experimental data were compared with several evaluated nuclear data libraries using a figure-of-merit. Overall, the JENDL-4.0 evaluation provided the best agreement with the U experimental data. Furthermore, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute scattering model was used to constrain uncertainties that allowed for improvements to a new U evaluation. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Quasi - Differential Neutron Scattering Measurements of 238 U

Uranium-238 is used extensively in nuclear reactor cores. Its nuclear properties have a significant effect on many aspects of the entire fuel cycle process from enrichment facilities and power production to nuclear waste storage facilities. In order to safely design such systems, an accurate evaluation of neutron interactions with U is required. This paper describes a process of quantifying dif...

Surrogate Measurement of the 238Pu(n,f) Cross Section

The neutron-induced fission cross section of 238 Pu was determined using the surrogate ratio method. The (n,f) cross section over an equivalent neutron energy range 5–20 MeV was deduced from inelastic α-induced fission reactions on 239 Pu, with 235 U(α, α f) and 236 U(α, α f) used as references. These reference reactions reflect 234 U(n,f) and 235 U(n,f) yields, respectively. The deduced 238 Pu...

Proceedings of a Specialists' Meeting on Neutron Cross Section Standards for the Energy Region above 20 Mev

The present status of neutron-proton scattering in the energy range from 20-70 MeV is reviewed. The data base covers total cross sections, differential cross sections and polarization observables. The efforts after 1980 did largely cnncentrate on precision measurements of the differential cross sections and accurate vector analyzing powers, using polarized neutron beams. Because of correlations...

Deducing the 237U(n,f) Cross Section Using the Surrogate Ratio Method

We have deduced the cross section for 237 U(n, f) over an equivalent neutron energy range from 0 to 20 MeV using the surrogate ratio method. A 55 MeV 4 He beam from the 88 inch cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory was used to induce fission in the following reactions: 238 U(α, α f) and 236 U(α, α f). The 238 U reaction was a surrogate for 237 U(n, f), and the 236 U reaction was us...

Utilizing (p,d) and (p,t) Reactions to Obtain (n,f) Cross Sections in Uranium Nuclei Via the Surrogate-Ratio Method

Utilizing (p,d) and (p,t) reactions to obtain (n, f) cross sections in uranium nuclei via the surrogate-ratio method The surrogate ratio method has been tested for (p, d) and (p, t) reactions on uranium nuclei. 236 U and 238 U targets were bombarded with 28-MeV protons and the light ion recoils and fission fragments were detected using the Silicon Telescope Array for Reaction Studies detector a...
